Oaxaca is one of Mexico’s most vibrant cities, known for its colourful streets, colonial architecture, incredible food, artisan crafts, mezcal, and rich Zapotec culture. Three days is enough to experience the city’s highlights, taste its famous cuisine, explore its creative neighbourhoods, and enjoy its relaxed atmosphere.

Day 1

Spend your first day wandering Oaxaca’s historic centre on foot. Visit Santo Domingo Church and the Botanical Garden, then explore Benito Juárez Market and Mercado 20 de Noviembre to sample local food and browse handmade crafts. Finish the day relaxing in the Zócalo before enjoying cocktails and a traditional Oaxacan dinner.

Tip: Wear comfortable shoes and carry cash for market purchases.

Day 2

Explore the colourful streets of Jalatlaco and Xochimilco, stopping at cafés, galleries, and artisan shops. Join a cooking class (3 hours) to learn how to prepare traditional Oaxacan dishes, then spend the afternoon discovering local workshops (try a wood engraving workshop!) or simply wandering the neighbourhoods. Finish with cocktails at Sabina Sabe and dinner at Las Quince Letras.

Tip: Book cooking classes in advance and allow time to explore beyond the main streets.

Day 3

Take a guided mezcal tour (6 hours) to visit local family run distilleries, learn about traditional production, and enjoy tastings in the countryside. Return to Oaxaca for a relaxed final evening, or watch Lucha Libre if you’re visiting on a Sunday.

Tip: Join an organised tour so everyone can enjoy the tastings safely, and consider buying mezcal directly from the producers.
