The laos rainy season, also called the laos monsoon season, is strongest between July and September. Most days don’t mean constant rain, it’s more like heavy showers later in the day, and clearer mornings.

The roads can get muddy in some areas, and travel times can be longer, but nature looks completely different. Everything turns green, rivers get fuller, and waterfalls are way more impressive.

May to August: green season, fuller rivers and fewer tourists

It will rain, often with short but strong showers, sometimes even heavy downpours. Your mornings can still be clear, so your day isn’t a total wash. You can expect temperatures around 25 to 32°C during the day, so it stays warm with higher humidity.

What’s nice about this period is that everything turns really green in this period, and places like the Bolaven Plateau look completely different. Also, fewer people travel now, so prices can be lower too!

September and October: a greener shoulder season with cultural highlights

By this point, the rain starts easing off and things slowly become more predictable again. Everything is still super green from the previous months, which makes this one of the best times to travel to Laos​. You can expect temperatures around 24 to 30°C, which makes it feel a bit more comfortable again.

You’ll also see more local events around this time, like nice river celebrations and boat races. Usually travelling gets easier again compared to the wet months.

What is burning season in Laos

Across parts of Laos, farmers still clear fields using fire at the end of the dry season, mainly to prepare the soil for the next planting cycle. Ash from the burned vegetation actually adds nutrients back into the ground, which is why this method has been used for generations.

In the north, this practice is more common in mountain areas, which is why you’ll notice that hazy sky there more than anywhere else, this is what’s known as slash and burn farming.

When does it happen

Across most years, this period runs from February to April. Within that window, March and April are usually the strongest. During these months, clear views are less reliable.

What it means for your trip

Over long distances, views can look very hazy. During hikes, air quality can make things less enjoyable, and on some days you can even see ash falling from the sky. A hot air balloon ride in Vang Vieng for example might not be worth it during the burning season.

In other regions, conditions can be better, so routes can still work with small adjustments. If you shift your trip slightly south can help avoid the worst of it.
