This 5 day itinerary uses Munich as a home-base but also explores the surrounding area, including highlights like Neuschwanstein Castle, which was inspiration for the Sleeping Beauty castle at Disneyland. For The Sound of Music fans, the day trip to Salzburg will be a particular highlight, as many places around the city were used as filming locations.
The Bavaria region is known for its pretzels, sausage, and beer, and this itinerary makes sure to include some of the best spots for the iconic local cuisine.

Recommended Stays

Hotel MIO by AMANO
Book here: https://booking.tpx.lt/VDnFTLXd
This hotel is centrally located in Old Town, just steps away from many main attractions. The rooms are small but efficient and modern. The buffet breakfast that’s included with your stay is a particular highlight, especially the pretzels - this is Bavaria after all! 🥨
Day 1
Start your trip to Munich by exploring Old Town. Be sure to time your visit to Marienplatz to see the Glockenspiel show, which happens every day at 11AM and 12PM (with an additional 5PM show March-October).
Finish the day at the iconic Hofbräuhaus München, the most famous beer hall in the world. Sit with strangers at the picnic-style tables and get to know one another over authentic German cuisine.

Day 2
On day 2, eat a light breakfast (or skip it altogether) and head out for a food tour! You’ll get to try a variety of dishes and get restaurant recommendations from a local. You can book the tour I did here: https://viator.tpx.lt/GJ6zsfEW
Afterwards, walk off all the food by touring the Munich Residenz and taking a stroll through the English Garden, a huge park near Old Town that features manmade river surfing!

Chinesischer Turm
Englischer Garten 3, 80538 München, Germany

Day 3
On day 3, take a day trip out to Linderhof Palace and Neuschwanstein Castle. “Mad” Kind Ludwig II built both residences, but they each feel unique and are both worth a visit. I recommend booking this guided tour of both palaces that includes transportation from Munich: https://viator.tpx.lt/tswjLVTA
End your day with another fantastic German dinner back in Munich.

Hotel & Restaurant Müller Hohenschwangau
Alpseestraße 16, 87645 Schwangau, Germany

Day 4
Day 4 is another day trip, this time to Austria! Salzburg is only 1.5 hours from Munich by train and it’s a pretty small city, making it perfect for a quick out-and-back.
Fortress Hohensalzburg stands high on a hill overlooking the city and is a great place for pictures. After that, check out Mozart’s birthplace and meander around town, passing many filming sites from The Sound of Music.
It’s easy enough to get from Munich to Salzburg by train, but if you’re uncomfortable figuring out the transit system, I recommend booking this tour: https://viator.tpx.lt/Nwaq8bOO

Day 5
On your last day in Munich, I recommend spending the morning at Dachau concentration camp. This tour is of course incredibly sad and moving, but it’s important to visit to learn from the past and not let history repeat itself. In fact, all German high schoolers are required to visit concentration camps as part of the curriculum. I did this tour and highly recommend it: https://gyg.me/EZK4rOas
In the afternoon, you’ll end your trip on a lighter note, visiting the BMW museum and the nearby Olympic Park, which hosted the 1972 summer games.
