Twenty euros and an online form. That's what visitors from the US, the UK, Canada, Australia and dozens of other countries will need before a Europe trip, once ETIAS actually launches. The EU had been targeting the last quarter of 2026, then dropped that date from its own communications in July 2026 without setting a new one, so we can't tell you exactly when, only that most current reporting points to 2027, and that airlines are expected to start checking for it roughly a year after whatever date it turns out to be. If you've ever filled in an American ESTA, you already understand the idea. (It's unrelated to the ETAs the UK, Canada and Australia run for their own borders, despite the similar letters.)

###
1\. What ETIAS is, and what it isn't

What is ETIAS, in one line? It's the European Travel Information and Authorisation System, a pre-travel check you complete online before you fly or drive into Europe's Schengen area. It's an electronic travel authorisation, not a visa. The US ESTA is the closest comparison, and the most useful one to keep in your head.

Once approved, an ETIAS is valid for three years or until your passport expires, whichever comes first. It covers as many trips as you like in that window, but it doesn't change how long you can stay. The standard Schengen limit of 90 days in any 180-day period still applies to every visit.

#### What it doesn't cover

ETIAS applies across the same 30 countries that use EES border rules. Ireland isn't one of them, because Ireland isn't part of Schengen. ETIAS also doesn't replace the check at the border itself. You'll still go through border control when you arrive.

###
2\. How ETIAS fits alongside EES

The easiest way to keep Europe's two new systems apart is by when they happen. ETIAS happens at home, before you travel. EES happens at the border.

EES, the Entry/Exit System, has been fully live since 10 April 2026. It registers travelers' biometric details as they enter and leave the Schengen area, and our companion guide covers how that works in practice.

The two are linked in another way. ETIAS was originally meant to launch in 2025, and it kept slipping mainly because EES ran late. With EES fully in place, one of the biggest blockers sources originally pointed to is gone, though separate IT integration issues between the two systems have since become the reason ETIAS itself keeps slipping.

###
3\. The €20 fee

An ETIAS application costs €20. Applicants under 18 or over 70 on the date they apply pay nothing, but they still need an approved ETIAS to travel. For something that can cover three years of trips, we'd call it one of the cheapest line items in any Europe budget.

> **Guided tip: **Apply only through the official EU site at travel-europe.europa.eu/etias. Third-party sites have been widely flagged for charging inflated “service fees” on top of what is a €20 government fee. The official site is the only one you need.

###
4\. When ETIAS starts, and how enforcement tightens

When does ETIAS launch? As of this writing, nobody can give you a real answer, officially or otherwise. The EU had been targeting the last quarter of 2026, but dropped that date from its own communications in July 2026 after concluding the system wasn't ready, and no replacement date has been announced since.

Industry watchers and travel press now treat 2027 as the likely window. That's an informed outside guess, not a government commitment, so we'd treat any specific month or quarter attached to “2027” the same way, as commentary, not fact.

Here's the thing actually worth watching: the EU has said it plans to give about six months' public notice before the real go-live date, whenever that turns out to be. That notice hasn't happened yet. Once it does, you'll have a genuine deadline to plan around, months ahead of the actual launch. Until then, the calendar year floating around in headlines is a placeholder, not a plan.

Launch day itself won't mean instant refusals. Once ETIAS does start, expect enforcement to tighten in stages over the following year.

- **The first six months or so.** A transition period. Travelers without an ETIAS aren't expected to be turned away for that alone if they meet every other entry condition. We wouldn't plan around that leniency.
- **The next six months.** A narrower grace period, and the details vary by source. One says only first-time arrivals get any exemption. Another says refusals are unlikely if other conditions are met, while admitting enforcement details remain unclear.
- **After that.** Full enforcement. Airlines, ferry operators and other carriers are expected to start denying boarding to travelers without a valid ETIAS.

###
5\. Who needs to apply, and how

ETIAS is for nationals of visa-exempt countries, the ones whose citizens can visit the Schengen area for short stays without a visa. Sources put the list at 59 or 60 countries and territories. It includes the US, the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Singapore and Brazil, along with most of Latin America.

If you already need a Schengen visa, as nationals of India, Nigeria, the Philippines and Pakistan do, ETIAS doesn't affect you.

The application is online only. According to one source, about 95% of applications are approved automatically within minutes. Cases that need manual review by an ETIAS National Unit can take up to 96 hours. The most complex ones, where you're asked for more information or an interview, can take up to 30 days in total. Minutes is the likely outcome. Plan your paperwork around the 30-day case instead, since that's the one that could actually eat into a trip.

6\. Practical tips

We'd treat ETIAS like a flight booking rather than a packing-list item. It's cheap and usually quick, and it still belongs early.

#### Before you book

Check your passport's expiry date. An ETIAS can't outlast the passport it's tied to, so a passport with less than three years left means a shorter ETIAS.

#### When you apply

- Apply at least several days before you travel, and weeks ahead if your plans allow, so a rare 30-day case doesn't catch you out.
- Apply for children and older relatives too. They pay nothing, but each of them still needs an approval.

#### At the border

Expect the EES check on arrival. A valid ETIAS doesn't let you skip it.

###
7\. What this means for your next Europe trip

Planning ahead for Europe? The honest answer is that nobody, us included, can tell you exactly which enforcement stage will apply on the date you travel, because the launch date itself isn't set yet.

Here's what we can say. Whenever ETIAS does launch, expect roughly a year of staged enforcement after it: about six months where a missing ETIAS mostly won't turn you away outright, another six where that leniency narrows, then full enforcement. If ETIAS launches sometime in 2027, as most current reporting expects, a fair amount of 2027 travel could fall inside that transition-and-grace window rather than under full enforcement, but we can't map specific months to specific stages until there's an actual start date to count from.

None of that changes the advice here: apply as soon as ETIAS is live and taking applications, whatever the calendar says when that happens.

###
8\. Final thoughts

We'd skip the anxiety here. The application itself takes minutes for most people, the fee is small, and the process isn't the part worth worrying about. Watch for the EU's go-live announcement, since that will tell you your real deadline, then apply a few weeks before your flight.

##
ETIAS in a nutshell

- A pre-travel online authorisation for visa-exempt visitors to Schengen, similar to the US ESTA. Not a visa.
- €20, free under 18 or over 70. Valid three years or until your passport expires.
- No official launch date has been set. The EU dropped its original Q4 2026 target in July 2026; 2027 is the working press assumption, not a confirmed date.
- Watch for the EU's promised six-month public notice announcement, that's the real signal a launch date is close, not the calendar year itself.
- Enforcement is expected to tighten in two stages after launch, with carrier checks likely around a year after go-live once it happens.
- Most approvals take minutes. Complex cases can take up to 30 days.
- EES handles the border check. Ireland isn't covered.

##
Planning the thing

ETIAS is one of the few parts of a Europe trip with a real lead time, once there's an actual date to plan around. Once the official ETIAS site is taking applications, it fits at the same point you'd book flights. The Guided travel planning app is where you can build the rest of the itinerary around it, and our EES guide covers what happens once you land. If you're still deciding where to go, our guide to Portugal is a good place to start. Or look at Germany, one of the easiest countries in Europe to get around by train. Start with the go-live date. For now, it's the one detail nobody has.
