# Dubai or Abu Dhabi, which suits your winter break?

Dubai has the nightlife; Abu Dhabi's four Saadiyat museums are open together for the first time this winter. Plan both with the Guided travel planning app.

Guggenheim Abu Dhabi opens on Saadiyat Island on 11 December 2026. From that date, the Louvre Abu Dhabi, teamLab Phenomena, the Zayed National Museum and the Guggenheim are all open on the same island at the same time, which has never happened in a winter before. That's a good reason to rethink a choice most winter visitors to the United Arab Emirates make on autopilot.

Dubai is the bigger, busier city, with the nightlife and the flight connections to match. Abu Dhabi, the UAE's capital, is calmer and leans into culture and nature. The two share the same mild winter weather and sit about 150 km apart, so the decision comes down to what you want your days and nights to look like. Read on and you'll know which one fits your trip, or whether you should do both.

##
Dubai vs Abu Dhabi in a nutshell

Our short version favours Abu Dhabi by day and Dubai after dark.

- Nightlife and shopping go to Dubai. Its bar, club, rooftop-lounge and beach-club scene is far bigger, and Dubai Mall alone has 1,200+ shops.
- Art and culture go to Abu Dhabi. Four major museums sit on Saadiyat Island this winter, led by the Louvre Abu Dhabi.
- Families who want everything close together should look at Abu Dhabi. Yas Island puts its big attractions side by side.
- Beaches are a draw. Dubai does exclusive hotel beach clubs. Abu Dhabi has more free public access.
- Weather won't separate them. Both see winter highs of 25-26°C.

##
How far apart are Dubai and Abu Dhabi?

About 150 km. That's the distance between the two along Sheikh Zayed Road (E11), and a direct drive typically takes 1 hour 20 minutes to 1 hour 40 minutes. Rush-hour traffic and holiday travel push that up.

They're separate emirates with their own airports. Dubai is the larger city and the better connected one, with more international connections at DXB than at Abu Dhabi's AUH, which is worth checking before you book flights. In our view the distance lands in a useful middle ground. It's close enough to see the other city on a day trip, and far enough that you won't want to make the drive every day.

##
How long to spend in each city

Three days in one city beats three days split between two, in our view. Every hotel move costs you a morning, plus up to 1 hour 40 minutes on the road before traffic gets involved. Here's how we'd plan it by trip length.

- A long weekend: Pick one city and stay put. Dubai if it's a city break built around nights out, Abu Dhabi if it's museums and the beach.
- Five days: Base yourself in one and give the other a single day. From Dubai, we'd spend that day on Saadiyat Island.
- One week: Long enough for a full week in Dubai on its own, or a four-night and three-night split if you want both cities.
- Ten days or more: Split the stay and move hotels once. You'll have time for Yas Island and Saadiyat without rushing Dubai.

> Fun fact: teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi has no permanent collection. It fills about 17,000 sq m with immersive digital installations, including mirrored rooms filled with projected butterflies.

##
What you'll do in each

Dubai has the world's tallest building and Abu Dhabi has a Louvre. Those two headline sights give a fair picture of how differently each city fills a day.

###
Dubai

You walk into Dubai Mall and you're inside one of the world's largest malls, with 1,200+ shops plus an aquarium, an ice rink and an indoor theme park under the same roof. That's Dubai's whole pitch in a single building.

Beyond the mall, Burj Khalifa is the world's tallest building, and the city also has an indoor ski slope and the world's largest Ferris wheel. Global Village is the one to know about if you're travelling as a family. It's a seasonal park of national pavilions with around 190 nationalities represented.

After dark is where Dubai pulls ahead. Its bar, club, rooftop-lounge and beach-club scene is much bigger than Abu Dhabi's, and the beach life leans the same direction. The best sand tends to be private or hotel-attached, with Palm Jumeirah's hotel beach clubs and day passes leading the way, while JBR is the main public option.

We'd call Dubai the better pick for anyone who judges a holiday by how much happens in it.

###
Abu Dhabi

Saadiyat Island will have four arts institutions open together from 11 December 2026.

- Louvre Abu Dhabi. Open since 2017 and the original anchor of the island's museum cluster.
- teamLab Phenomena Abu Dhabi. Opened in mid-April 2025 as the second arts institution in the Saadiyat Cultural District, with immersive digital installations in place of a permanent collection.
- Zayed National Museum. Opened on 3 December 2025. Adult tickets are Dh70, and UAE students and teachers pay Dh35. Minors, senior Emiratis and residents, people of determination and journalists on assignment get in free. Entry runs in hourly slots from 10am, with the last slot at 6pm.
- Guggenheim Abu Dhabi. Opens on 11 December 2026, early in peak season.

If Abu Dhabi museums are your reason to travel, this is the winter we'd pick.

Away from Saadiyat, the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is the one sight we wouldn't skip. For nature, you can kayak through the mangroves at Mangrove National Park, and Al Wathba Wetland is the other big outdoor stop.

Yas Island is where families and night owls end up. Ferrari World, Yas Waterworld and Yas Beach sit close together, and much of the city's nightlife is on the island or in a handful of hotels. It's a real scene, but it isn't in Dubai's league.

Beach access is easier here than in Dubai. Corniche Beach, Saadiyat Beach and Yas Beach are all public options, and Zaya Nurai Island offers a more exclusive day out, by day pass or overnight stay only.

##
Weather and the best time to go

Is winter really the best time to visit Dubai? Yes, and the same goes for Abu Dhabi. From December to March, daytime highs average 25-26°C (78°F) and nights drop to around 15°C (59°F) across the UAE. Spring and autumn run noticeably hotter, with highs in the mid-30s°C, and summer is extreme. June to August highs average 41-43°C (106-108°F).

The peak tourist window runs from late November to late March, with December to March the strongest stretch. Late February to mid-March keeps the same pleasant temperatures with slightly lighter crowds, and if your dates are flexible, that's when we'd go.

###
What about the Dubai Shopping Festival?

The Dubai Shopping Festival is an annual retail-and-entertainment festival that runs for five to six weeks, and it has historically started in early December and carried on into January. The most recent confirmed edition, the 31st, ran from 5 December 2025 to 11 January 2026. Dates for the winter 2026-27 edition haven't been officially announced yet, though a similar early-December-into-January window is a reasonable expectation. Check the official dates before you build a trip around it.

##
How to decide between the two cities

For a first winter trip to the UAE, we'd lean Abu Dhabi this year, and Saadiyat is the reason. If nightlife is a priority, ignore that and book Dubai.

Safety won't settle it either way. Both cities are considered very safe for tourists.

Drinking rules matter less than many travellers expect. Neither emirate requires a licence to drink at a licensed bar, restaurant or lounge, and the drinking age is 21 in both. In Dubai, a licence is only needed if you're buying alcohol to drink at home, and tourists can get a temporary 30-day version by showing a passport. Abu Dhabi doesn't require a purchase licence at all, though drinking is limited to private homes and licensed venues.

###
Choose Dubai if this sounds like your trip

Want a different bar or beach club every night? Then Dubai is your city.

- You want nightlife to be a big part of the holiday, with plenty of bars and rooftop lounges to rotate through.
- Shopping is high on the list, and you'd like to time the trip around the Dubai Shopping Festival.
- Your ideal beach day comes with a sunbed at a Palm Jumeirah hotel beach club or a day pass.
- You want the record-breakers, from Burj Khalifa to the world's largest Ferris wheel.
- Flight options matter, since DXB has more international connections than AUH.
- You're travelling with kids who'd love Global Village or the aquarium and ice rink at Dubai Mall, and you don't mind more time getting between sights in a more spread-out city.

###
Choose Abu Dhabi if this sounds like your trip

Abu Dhabi is the UAE's capital, and it moves at a calmer, more traditional pace than Dubai. For a traveller who wants culture and nature over nightlife, we'd pick it without much hesitation.

- Museums are the main event, and you want the Louvre Abu Dhabi, teamLab Phenomena, the Zayed National Museum and the Guggenheim in one winter.
- You're planning Yas Island with kids, where the theme parks and the beach sit close together and the days are easier to manage.
- You'd rather walk onto a public beach like Corniche Beach than book a hotel day pass.
- Nature appeals, from kayaking the mangroves at Mangrove National Park to a visit to Al Wathba Wetland.
- The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque is high on your list.
- Nightlife means a good hotel bar or a night out on Yas Island rather than a new club every night.
- You want a five-star stay and would like it to cost a little less.

##
Which city costs more?

Abu Dhabi wins on value at the top end, in our view, though only by a little. Its five-star hotels tend to run a little cheaper than Dubai's for a similar standard. Both cities span every budget, so neither one rules itself out on price.

We'd worry more about when you go than which city you pick. Winter is the highest-demand, highest-price period for accommodation, especially around New Year and the Dubai Shopping Festival window.

> Guided tip: Late February to mid-March brings the same pleasant temperatures as December with slightly lighter crowds, and it sits clear of the New Year and Shopping Festival rush.

##
Can you put both into one trip?

A drive of 1 hour 20 minutes to 1 hour 40 minutes is all that separates the two cities, so yes, and easily. The simplest version is a Dubai base with one day in Abu Dhabi. We'd pick a single focus for that day, either Saadiyat's museums or the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, rather than trying to squeeze in everything.

If you're based in Abu Dhabi, the reverse works for an evening in Dubai, as long as you have a plan for getting back late. With a week or more, we'd skip the day trips altogether and split your nights between the two cities.

##
Getting between Dubai and Abu Dhabi

What's the easiest way to travel between them? By road, along Sheikh Zayed Road (E11). The real choice is whether you go independently or join a day tour.

###
By car or taxi

A direct drive covers about 150 km and typically takes 1 hour 20 minutes to 1 hour 40 minutes. Driving yourself or taking a taxi gives you full control of the day. That's the option we'd choose if your plan involves timed museum entry, like the Zayed National Museum's hourly slots, or a late night out.

###
On a day tour

We'd only book a day tour if you'd rather not think about the drive at all. It suits a first-timer who wants the headline sights handled in one go, but you trade away the freedom to linger at the Louvre Abu Dhabi.

> Guided tip: The 1 hour 20 minute to 1 hour 40 minute drive stretches in weekday-morning, Friday-evening and holiday traffic, so set off outside those windows if you can.

##
So, Dubai or Abu Dhabi?

Both cities share the same 25-26°C winter days and sit about 150 km apart, so there's no wrong answer here. The difference is in what fills your days and nights.

- Dubai: Nightlife, shopping, hotel beach clubs and more flight connections. Pick it if you want a winter break that never slows down.
- Abu Dhabi: Saadiyat's four museums, public beaches, mangroves and Yas Island with kids. Pick it this winter if culture is the reason you're going.

Whichever city wins, you can map out the drive and those hourly museum slots in the Guided travel planning app.
