Three days split across Porto's tiled old town, the port lodges and viewpoints of Gaia, and the Atlantic edge at Foz and Matosinhos. It's built around counter-bar sandwiches, sunset spots and the places locals still use.

Morning: Get to São Bento station early, when the light falls on the tiles and before the commuters arrive. Then walk up to the Sé for the cloister and the terrace view.

Afternoon: Head north to Bolhão market (closed Sundays and holidays), stop by the tiled Capela das Almas, and queue at Conga for a bifana (also closed Mondays). Have a warm nata at Manteigaria afterwards.

Evening: Climb Torre dos Clérigos (last entry 18:30, book online) and look out over the old town as the light goes. Lello is next door if you've booked a late slot.

Morning: Wander down through Ribeira's lanes to the quayside. If it rains, book a Palácio da Bolsa tour.

Afternoon: Lunch at Taberna Santo António in Miragaia (book by phone, and check whether it's closed on Mondays), then walk back along the river and cross the lower deck of Ponte Luís I. Book a mid-afternoon tasting at Taylor's (open until 18:15), which is uphill but worth it.

Evening: Sunset is around 17:45 after the clocks go back on 25 Oct, so be on the Jardim do Morro lawn by about 17:15. Then walk back over the top deck for a drink at the Guindalense terrace (closed Sundays) as the bridge lights come on.

Morning: Not on a Sunday or Tuesday. Take Metro Line A to Matosinhos and be at the fish market by 10:00, as it's mainly a morning market.

Afternoon: Have a grilled-fish lunch at O Gaveto (closed Tuesdays, book a week ahead), or the cheaper grills on Rua Heróis de França. Then take a taxi or bus to Serralves for the gardens and treetop walk.

Evening: Head to the Pérgola on the Foz seafront for sunset (around 17:45 after 25 Oct). Bring a layer. Then take bus 500 back along the river to Cais do Ouro for the little ferry (last boat 20:00 Mon–Thu, 22:00 Fri–Sat) across to Afurada for grilled squid and a cold beer.
