The Faroe Islands is one of the most under-the-radar destinations I’ve ever visited. Many people haven’t heard of this country (officially part of the Kingdom of Denmark) located between Norway, Scotland, and Iceland. It’s an archipelago made up of 18 islands and has a small but thriving population with their own language and culture 🇫🇴

The landscapes here are stunning in their own right. It’s one of the greenest places in the world with dramatic mountains and cliffs rising from the ocean. In the summer months, several islands are home to puffin colonies 🐧The chance to see puffins is what initially drew me to the Faroe Islands, but this country has a special charm that will keep me coming back over and over.

You’ll definitely want to rent a car to get around the islands, though some smaller islands are only accessible by ferry. There are bridges and undersea tunnels between the major islands. You can search for your rental car here: https://rentalcars.tpx.lt/1qNpn4Q3

The Faroe Islands is small enough that you can drive from Tórshavn to any other part of the islands in about an hour or less. Thus, it’s easy to stay in the capital city as a home base for the entirety of your trip.

The Hilton Garden Inn boasts a fantastic buffet breakfast, free parking, and a free glass of wine during happy hour each day. We were very happy with our stay here.

Day 1

After you arrive in the Faroe Islands, pick up your rental car and drive to the capital city of TĂłrshavn. To get familiar with this country, its history, etc., take a walking tour of the city. This is the one I did and recommend: https://guidetofaroeislands.fo/book-holiday-trips/torshavn-walking-tour/

Afterwards, spend the evening having dinner at a local’s house. The Faroese term for this is “heimablídni.” It’s a great way to try local food and interact with the people who make this island so special. Here’s the one we did: https://heimablidni.fo/en/

Day 2

If you come to the Faroe Islands in the summer, Mykines Island is a must-visit and your best chance to see puffins up close. These iconic birds spend most of the year at sea, but come to cliffs all along the north Atlantic to lay their eggs and feed their chicks in the summer.

This island is only accessible by ferry or helicopter and you must have a guide on the island. Registering in advance is essential because ferry and tour spots both sell out.

In the evening, discover why the Faroe Islands is a hidden gem in the food world. The islands have several incredible restaurants, including ROKS. If you like fine dining and seafood, this is for you. Advance bookings are required.

Day 3

Start day 3 with a quick trip to Nólsoy, which you can access by ferry from Tórshavn. No need to pre-book, just pay when you board. The island is home a small town and plenty of land to hike. If you’re lucky, you may even spot some puffins.

When you get back to Tórshavn, hop in the car and drive to the northern-most part of the Faroe Islands to hike Mount Villingadalsfjall. This hike has a 200DKK entry fee (paid in cash at a box at the entrance) and a small parking area. It’s a steep hike but gives you incredible views. If you’re interested in hiking the nearby Cape Enniberg, you need a guide for that.

After a long hike, relax your tired muscles with a session in a floating sauna and jump right into the harbor for a refreshing cold plunge. Then cap off your night with a delicious meal at Barbara Fish House back in TĂłrshavn.

Day 4

Start your day with a trip to Kalsoy. You can take the ferry to this island and explore on your own, but I recommend booking this tour: https://guidetofaroeislands.fo/book-holiday-trips/lighthouse-kalsoy/

After you arrive in Kalsoy, a van will pick you up and take you to the village of Mikladalur to see the Seal Woman statue and learn about the legend. Then you’ll head over to Trøllanes and the farmer who owns the land will take you on a guided hike to Kallur Lighthouse. Along the way, he’ll tell stories about growing up here, farming, and what it was like to have the James Bond film “No Time to Die” filmed here. At the end, you may even get to see some more puffins!

After you take the ferry back, drive to the town of Gjógv, whose name translated to “gorge.” There is in fact a gorge here that gives the town its name. You can hike around and explore this area.

Finish the day with one last amazing dinner in the Faroe Islands. Katrina Christensen may have been our favorite restaurant of the trip!

Day 5

On your last day, stop by Fossá, the highest waterfall in the Faroe Islands. Then make your way north to Tjørnuvik’s black sand beach.

As you head back towards the airport, stop at Trælanípa for one final hike to experience the optical illusion “hanging lake” (Sørvágsvatn) that seems to be impossibly suspended over the ocean. It’s a pretty easy 4 mile out-and-back hike with a 200DKK entry fee (by card or cash at the entrance). It’s the perfect way to finish off your trip and only a few minutes from the airport.
